论古代中国的前轴心时代

On the Pre-Axial Age of Ancient China

摘要: 在雅斯贝斯所认定的诸轴心期文明中,古希腊和古印度等在轴心期之前都发生过文化的断裂,只有中国的轴心文明与之前保持了历史和文化的连续性,因而春秋战国的大突破是以数百年前发生过的突破为前提和基础的。按照雅斯贝斯的理论,轴心期的最大特点是对传统的突破,以此为标准,说中国在轴心时代之前还存在“前轴心时代”是可以成立的。公元前11世纪,周公在反思殷周递嬗的巨大变革时,对天命有了革命性的新认识。周公发现,天命可以还原为民心,且会随着民心向背而发生转移。周要永葆天命,就必须敬德保民。这是周公在天人之际问题上的重大思想突破,他以此为基础又进一步在连续性和统一性两个方面实现了连锁性突破。连续性方面,是夏、商、周从共时的并列关系转变为历时的接续关系。“三代”观念以及注重通变的通史精神由此开始形成,这个观念表现了鲜明的历史理性。统一性方面,封建制与宗法制的建立,创造了西周数百年的一统局面;天命民心观中孕育的天下一家思想,则在数千年的中国历史中为促进族群融合、维护国家统一发挥了文化认同作用。以孔子的“仁”的学说为代表的春秋战国轴心文明,恰恰是对周公开创的前轴心文明的继承和发扬。

Abstract: Among the axial-age civilizations identified by Jaspers,both ancient Greece and ancient India experienced cultural fracture prior to the axial age.In contrast,only the Chinese axial-age civilization maintains historical and cultural continuity.Therefore,the intellectual and cultural breakthroughs of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods were grounded in and presupposed earlier breakthroughs that had occurred centuries before.According to Jaspers' theory,the defining characteristic of the axial age was a profound breakthrough from tradition.By this criterion,it is reasonable to argue that China experienced a “pre-axial age” prior to the axial period.In the 11th century BCE,during the transition from the Shang (Yin) to the Zhou dynasty,Duke Zhou reflected deeply on this transformative historical shift and developed a revolutionary new understanding of the Mandate of Heaven.He realized that the Mandate of Heaven could be reduced to the will of people and would change in accordance with their support or opposition.Thus,if the Zhou wants to sustain the Mandate of Heaven,they must govern with virtue and safeguard the welfare of the people.This constituted a major ideological breakthrough regarding the relationship between the heaven and humanity.Building upon this insight,Duke Zhou further achieved a series of interconnected breakthroughs that emphasized both continuity and unity.In terms of continuity,the Xia,Shang,and Zhou dynasties transitioned from a synchronic,parallel structure to a diachronic,continuous lineage.This shift gave rise to the concept of the “Three Dynasties” and a historical consciousness that emphasized continuity through change,reflecting a distinct form of historical rationality.In terms of unity,the establishment of the feudal and patriarchal clan systems contributed to a politically and culturally unified order during the Western Zhou dynasty.The idea of “all under heaven as one family”,rooted in the doctrine of “the Mandate of Heaven is the people's will”,played a crucial role in shaping cultural identity throughout Chinese history,fostering ethnic integration and preserving national cohesion.The axial civilization of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods exemplified by Confucius' doctrine of “Ren”,was a direct continuation and further development of the pre-axial civilization initiated by Duke Zhou.
